Bob Dylan and Internet Marketing

By admin | May 15, 2008

I just sent my regular monthly newsletter out to my subscriber list. Over six thousand people are going to be reading my newsletter……and I think I got it wrong.

You can read the newsletter by looking at the post below this one on the blog.

The newsletter is about building a list, looking after it and not worrying about doing the JV’s that most marketers seem to be obsessed with.

That part is right - but what I failed to REALLY get across is that email marketing - marketing to your list - is on it’s way out.

Bugging people by email to buy your products still works, at least to an extent, and works better if you have a group of people with whom you’ve been honest, tried to help out and haven’t tried to wring every last cent out of.

But what REALLY counts isn’t the email you send them, it’s whether or not they say ‘yeah that Sara Brown is on the level’ or not.

If they’ll talk to their friends, contacts and customers about how you’re being straight and honest with them, them the virus will spread…….and likewise if you treat them badly.

Our lot seem to like us

And this is how we get most of our customers.

…..and this is what I should have made clearer in the newsletter.

I suppose it comes down to ‘what goes around comes around’

If anyone is reading this who blasts their list with sales email after sales email…..it’s time to think again, and quickly because the times they are a changing…….

As for the advice, I both agree and disagree with what you’ve said.

JV’s do certainly help in both short term list building and immediate profits. - SO I have to say I think it still wise to try to build and maintain relationships with marketers who may have larger lists.

That said I agree that we shouldn’t get upset if we get no reply - or a reply of no…
(It’s not personal - just a numbers game!)

Where I agree is in helping your subscribers, I’ve only recently noticed links from a lot of blogs and websites pointing to my pages - and wondered how they got there - on searching ad going to the linking sites, I see that it is the blog or website of someone I’ve genuinely tried to help, a subscriber or customer of mine. And they, in appreciateion, have linked to me and even posted some lovely comments about me.

Apart from giving me a feel good factor of knowing I helped them and they appreciate it - it also raises my standing with the search engines in the long term - so although the immediate traffic may be very small…. long term it does sanction your own advice.

    Hence - I agree and disagree :)

    Best Regards
    Randy

    Hi,
Me again. Was reading the post by Randy and now I feel I can breathe a sigh of relief abou the JV Giveaways. To me they are just more trouble than they are worth. I have tried using that type of promotion without success. I think they best type of list building does go back to friends. Building a team that will sign up and help market products. Teamwork is number one. Marketing can not be done alone. No man is an island as the saying goes.

What can be said about the use of safelist? Are you or anyone having success with safelist? What are the downfalls or successes of using safelist marketing.
